Nadi Filter Technology: A Simple Clay Innovation Saving Families and the Planet from Plastic Pollution, Cholera Outbreaks, Gastro and Diarrhea.

In a powerful example of local innovation meeting global challenges, one rural family using the Nadi Filter has eliminated the need to purchase bottled water, helping reduce plastic pollution while also saving household income. The Nadi Filter, a clay-based water filtration technology developed and promoted by the Association for Humanitarian Development (AHD), is proving to be a game-changer across communities in Pakistan and around the world.

A Step toward Ending Plastic Pollution

Plastic pollution has become one of the world’s most urgent environmental crises. Recognizing this, the United Nations has set goals to end plastic pollution as part of its sustainable development agenda. AHD’s Nadi Filter aligns perfectly with this mission—offering an eco-friendly, affordable, and sustainable solution that reduces the dependence on plastic bottles. Each Nadi Filter has the potential to replace up to 2 plastic water bottles of 5 liters per day, resulting in an estimated 12,410 bottles saved per family over 17 years. With more than 365,000 families already using the Nadi Filter in Pakistan and Africa, the environmental impact is massive—equivalent to millions of plastic bottles avoided. Moreover, the financial savings are just as impactful: each family saves approximately PKR 13,651 annually, totaling more than PKR 13.65 million in savings across participating households.

A Scalable Solution for Millions

“Nadi Filter is more than a water solution; it’s a movement,” says Mr. A. Khurshid Bhatti, founder of AHD. “It’s a key to mobilize millions of families to shift away from harmful plastic bottles and bags, adopting a healthier, sustainable lifestyle for both people and the planet.”As we move forward, AHD calls on donors, partners, and policymakers to help scale this innovation to reach one million families globally by 2030, contributing to clean water access, climate resilience, and plastic pollution reduction.

“Join the movement. Save water. Save lives. Save the planet”.
